Did you know that November is World Vegan Month? While I am vegetarian rather than vegan, I often eat vegan food, especially when I eat out, as the options are usually the same! I wasn’t a fan of vegan cheese before, but I’ve come to like it more, so I’m seriously considering having a more vegan diet, even if it’s just a few days a week.
A vegan meal out – the choices and struggles
The choices when eating out as a vegan are generally pretty limited, although I’ve noticed that it’s getting better over the last few years. If you’re also trying to eat out with meat eaters, sometimes you really have everything against you on a budget and healthy.
When was the last time you saw someone making a salad while it wasn’t summer? Or maybe something healthy but hot? It’s so frustrating, especially if you’re vegan, since so many recipes use dairy.
Then when you find somewhere perfect, it’s expensive, which is just as frustrating! Anyway, aside from that, I recently found some lovely places to eat and a way to get a great discount too, read on and I’ll tell you how!
Vegan options from well-known brands
I get really sick of tomato-based pasta dishes and veggie burgers when I eat out, so always welcome alternatives. Here are a few I’ve found and loved lately.
Although I love Italian food, I often avoided our local Bella Italia as it is next to the cinema so I thought the car park would be busy, but when we visited recently I was surprised that it actually wasn’t busy at all . We also took advantage of the Bella Italia deals I mention below, so it wasn’t too expensive either.
The selection of vegan foods was minimal but good and I enjoyed a vegan pepperoni pizza. If you are watching your calories too there is a lighter version with half a pizza and half a salad which I liked the idea of. The pizza was delicious and it really felt like I ate as well as the others in the group.
Hutt at Ravenshead – Chef and Brewer
I should start by saying I’m not sure if all Chef and Brewer’s are the same, but Hutt at Ravenshead (between Mansfield and Nottingham, near Newstead Abbey) had a good vegan selection.
I recently enjoyed the mushroom and ale pie there which was delicious and although it was vegan it looked just as good as Stuart’s meat pie. It didn’t taste vegan and was a delicious wholesome meal.
With 5 vegan main course choices, 2 vegan starters and three vegan desserts it was a perfect place for vegans, but there really was something for everyone! We enjoy eating out as a couple, but Stuart loves meat and could never be vegetarian or vegan!
Get the best deals on dining out
The best deals for dining out are always when there are deals. Sometimes it’s easier to find deals than others, but registering your birthday at each chain is always a good idea. Otherwise it can be a bit hit and miss unless you have some sort of discount card!
Have you heard of tastecard? This is a great way to get discounts at a variety of places to eat out as well as the cinema, coffee shops and days out. There is a free trial for 30 days and after that it costs £39.99 for a year or £5.99 per month and can be canceled at any time. Membership gives you a great discount at Bella Italia with currently 2 for 1, and not just on main courses!
The menu I love at Hutt can also be discounted with a tasting card at a 25% discount, which I wish I had known before we last visited! It’s easy to see how a few trips a year will soon save you more money than you spend on your taste buds. If you’re skilled, you can also get it for just a few months!
Many other places also have offers, up to 40% off at the cinema with a taste card and even discounts at Alton Towers, Legoland and several other places! Everywhere has different restrictions so be sure to check, but many I’ve seen are only weekend nights, Christmas Day, etc.
