T20 World Cup Brilliant Surya Lights Up MCG As India Enter Semis 1

Surya reaping the rewards for focusing on hard work, fitness

Suryakumar Yadav has had a phenomenal run in the T20 format of the game this year, which has seen him climb to the top of the ICC rankings to occupy the number one spot.

The 32-year-old Mumbai batsman has shown remarkable consistency in a format in which that is not the norm, especially at the strike rate he has maintained.

Surya amassed 1026 runs from 2022 at an average of 44 plus and a strike rate of 186, a no-nonsense feat.

He has been in terrific form in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which has now reached the semi-finals in Australia, with a score of 225.

His run score includes three half-tons and he averages 75 at a strike rate a shade below 194.

He has a career strike rate of 179 from 39 matches which is nothing short of sensational.

Surya’s fireworks in his 61 not out in 25 balls against Zimbabwe in India’s last league game, in which he played the round and pull shot from outside the off stump against the pacers, also earned him a deserving man of the match award.

India will hope that Surya continues in this vein.

Head coach Rahul Dravid while praising the number four batsman also pointed out that it did not come out of the blue but is the result of hard work and excellent fitness programme.

“I think he worked very hard. I think one of the things about Surya is just the amount of hard work he’s put in in the nets, thinking about his game, his fitness. Looking at Surya from a few years ago, just to see how he takes care of his body and the amount of time he spends on his fitness, I think he really deserves the reward for a lot of the hard work he does on and fielding, and long may it continue,” remarked Dravid after India’s 71-run win over Zimbabwe at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here last night.

Talking about Surya’s tremendous form, Dravid pointed out how his consistency at the rapid rate at which he gets the runs has been truly remarkable.

“Yes, it’s incredible. That’s why he’s the No. 1 T20 player in the world right now, because of that consistency in a format where he’s scoring at a strike rate that he’s not actually doing – it’s not easy to be consistent with that kind of hit rate not. he goes by So, it’s just fantastic how he plays. I think he was very clear in his processes. He is very clear about his tactics.

“I think he’s been absolutely phenomenal for us. He is just a joy to watch. It is a pleasure to watch him bat when he is in that kind of form. Every time it’s like he puts on a show, no doubt,” Dravid further gushed in praise of the number four batsman.

Off-spinner Ravichandra Ashwin, who has taken heavy punishment from Surya at times in previous IPL matches, was also full of praise for his teammate.

He is not a spring chicken but still quite early in his international cricket he has been able to express himself,” Ashwin said while speaking to reporters in the mixed zone at the MCG last night.

“You wouldn’t expect someone to play a round that he played against a fast bowler. Surya plays such shots as everyone knows. He is one of the members of the team who spins well, with whip and reverse whip. If that merges with people who can hit the ground running, it’s a great combination,” he continued.

For the record, Surya only got a late call-up for an India debut in white-ball cricket last year and is yet to figure in Tests after featuring in 13 One Day Internationals and 77 first-class matches, excluding T20Is.

In first-class cricket, Surya, or SKY as he is known, has amassed over 5,000 runs peppered with 14 hundreds and 26 fifties
