3 Ideas for Organizing Your Life

This is a collaborative post or advertisement.

How often have you started a sentence with something like “If only I could be more organized, I could be”? The rest of that sentence might have ended with getting a better job, buying a house, getting in shape, paying off this debt or in many other ways.

If you’re like many people, you probably see your lack of organization as a major hindrance to something you’d like to achieve.

Unfortunately, you may also have absorbed the idea that you are either an organized person or you are not and that there is nothing you can do to change.

The good news is that while you may never become someone who likes to put the spice rack in alphabetical order, you absolutely can organize and improve your life.

Motivational Laptop

One reason why the idea of getting organized can seem so overwhelming is that you may feel like you don’t know where to start. Your closet is a mess, there’s a stack of mail as high as you in the hallway, and you’ve been dreading checking your bank account for months.

How can you ever fix it in the limited time that exists between work, sleep and a life? The answer is that you can’t, at least not all at once. As the saying goes, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Don’t try to do everything. Try to do just one thing. Pick a single thing to focus on, and if you get stuck trying to figure out which one is most important, don’t. You can even choose the easiest one.

There are different types of motivational techniques you can use to keep yourself accountable once you’ve decided where to start.

Concrete goals and actions

Your next step is to be more specific in stating your goal than getting organized. Maybe you want to reduce your closet to a certain number of items and give away, sell or donate the rest, or maybe you want a workable plan to pay off your debt.

Identify your concrete goal and then write down the steps you need to take to achieve it. This may require research. If you want to pay off your debts, you may not realize that some of them can be refinanced. A NaviRefi student loan refinance (US only) can mean lower monthly payments and can also mean your interest rate is lower, allowing you to pay off the loan faster.

Refinancing your home or car may also be possible. You will also need to plan how much you will pay each month and a schedule to become debt free.

Habits over discipline

Do you think of it as a matter of discipline that you shower, brush your teeth or show up to work every day? Probably not. Most like you to think of things as things you have to do, regardless of how you feel.

The key to getting organized is to take a similar approach to whatever you’re trying to get organized. Spending ten minutes a day sorting through that pile of mail doesn’t require you to really get in the mood for sorting.

It’s just something you do, like washing dishes or feeding the cat. This approach not only helps you to let go of some of the requirements you didn’t even realize you were putting on your actions, but it also takes some of the burden off.

You no longer have to beat yourself up for not having the self-discipline to be organized, because you know it’s not about self-discipline. It’s just about establishing a habit and reinforcing it by doing it regularly until it becomes second nature.

You can then go back to your things to get an organized list and use the same principles to eventually work your way through everything on it.
